  4. Transfer the moulds to the freezer and leave to freeze overnight.
  5. Carefully remove from its mould and serve.

Notes: Watermelons (also known as the smiles of summer) have a 92% water content, making them one of the most hydrating snacks around.

They're a great way to encourage a dog to drink more water and receive healthy minerals, vitamins and nutrients at the same time.

Low in calories, they're the ideal choice tokeep a dog cool in summer – just take care to remove any seeds, as these can cause blockages and gastrointestinal upset.

đź’ˇ Top Tip:These ice lollies tend to melt quickly because of the high water content. For best results, serve to your pup shortly after taking out of the freezer.

Banana, Coconut, and Peanut Butter

Ingredients:

1 banana
1 tsp xylitol-free peanut butter
1 tsp natural coconut milk
â…“ cup fresh water

Method:

  1. Peel the banana and slice into small pieces.
  2. Blend all ingredients together for 10 - 20 seconds, adding fresh water gradually until you achieve a smooth and runny consistency.
  3. Pour the liquid into ice lolly moulds. Depending on the size of your moulds, you should be able to make between 2 - 3 ice lollies.
  4. Put the moulds in the freezer and leave to freeze overnight.
  5. Carefully remove the lolly from its mould and serve to your dog outdoors on a warm summer’s day.

Notes: Peanut butter is a great source of protein and healthy fats, but it's important to be careful with the type of peanut butter you choose.

Make sure the peanut butter you use does not contain xylitol. Xylitol is a type of artificial sweetener found in lots of human foods. Even in small quantities it is extremely toxic to dogs.

Coconut milk is a great dairy-free alternative for dogs, full of anti-inflammatory properties. Small quantities of coconut milk and cream can help boost a dog's immune system, promote healthy skin, and maintain a shiny dog coat.

If you decide to use yoghurt instead, remember that yoghurt contains lactose, which many dogs can find difficult to digest.

Carrot, Pumpkin, and Sweet Potato

Ingredients:

3 - 4 carrots
ÂĽ pumpkin
1 sweet potato
â…“ cup fresh water

Method:

  1. Wash the vegetables. Then, remove the hard skin from the pumpkin and peel the carrots and sweet potatoes.
  2. Chop the carrots, pumpkin and sweet potato into small cubes and then steam for 10 - 13 minutes.
  3. When all the veggies are soft, remove from the steamer/boiling water then transfer to a collider and leave to cool for 15 minutes.
  4. Pop the steamed veggies into a blender and blend until the consistency is smooth. As with the banana ice lollies, you may need to add some fresh water to achieve a runny consistency.
  5. Once blended and completely cool, pour the mixture into your dog ice lolly moulds and leave to freeze overnight. The next morning, carefully remove the lolly from its mould and serve to your dog.

Which ice lollies are safe for dogs?

The safest lollies for dogs are the ones you make yourself. That way, you know exactly what’s going into them.

Avoid:

  • Store-bought ice lollies (which often contain sugar, xylitol, or other toxic ingredients)
  • Chocolate, raisins, grapes, and artificial sweeteners
  • Dairy (unless your dog can tolerate it, opt for yogurt or coconut milk instead)

If in doubt, always check with your vet before introducing new treats.

Extra Tips for Serving Dog Ice Lollies
